Looking for used tractors for sale in South Africa?
Buying a second-hand tractor can be a practical way to get the machinery you need without the cost of purchasing brand new. Whether you’re farming crops, managing livestock or maintaining land, the right tractor can become one of the most important machines on your farm.
Before buying, however, there are a few things worth checking.
1. Choose the Right Tractor for the Job
Start with what you actually need the tractor to do.
Will you use it for:

• Ploughing and cultivation?
• Planting?
• Spraying?
• Mowing?
• Moving feed?
• Pulling trailers?
• General farm work?

Consider horsepower, size, transmission, hydraulic capacity and compatibility with the implements you already own.
2. Check the Operating Hours
Tractor hours can give you an indication of how much work the machine has done, but hours shouldn’t be considered alone.
A higher-hour tractor that has been properly maintained may be a better option than a lower-hour machine with poor maintenance.
Ask for the service and maintenance history where available.
3. Inspect the Tractor
Before buying a used tractor, check:

• Engine condition
• Oil and fluid leaks
• Hydraulics
• Transmission
• PTO
• Three-point linkage
• Steering
• Brakes
• Tyres
• Electrical system

If you’re unsure what to look for, consider asking an experienced mechanic to inspect the tractor.

4. Look at the Tyres
Tractor tyres can be expensive to replace.
Check the remaining tread as well as cracking, cuts and other damage.
A tractor with a slightly higher purchase price but good tyres could potentially be better value than a cheaper machine that immediately needs a new set.
5. Check Parts Availability
Before buying an older or unfamiliar tractor, find out whether replacement parts and servicing are readily available in South Africa.
A good purchase price won’t mean much if the tractor spends weeks standing because you can’t find a replacement part.
Used Tractor or New Tractor?
Buying new gives you access to the latest equipment, technology and manufacturer support.
Buying used, however, can significantly reduce the initial amount required to add another tractor to your operation.
The right option depends on your budget, workload and how frequently the tractor will be used.
